This is not the first time a cricketer is being reprimanded for breaking rules of the game in one way or other. 2018 saw the finest players of the game, Steve Smith and David Warner fall from grace after the sand-paper gate incident.

It was shocking to see such fine men deliberately trying to sabotage the game by tampering the ball. They indeed were punished for this and faced a ban for a period of one year. The players are still booed and called out for the mistake even though they gave out their official apologies.

Bangladeshi skipper has been booked under:

  • Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018 and / or the 2018 IPL

  • Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab on 26 April 2018.

Al Hasan gave out a public statement:

“I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches. The ICC ACU is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn’t do my duty in this instance.

Like the majority of players and fans around the world, I want cricket to be a corruption-free sport and I am looking forward to working with the ICC ACU team to support their education programme and ensure young players don’t make the same mistake I did.”

This indeed is quite sad for the game but definitely a lesson for all players around the world playing the game that it is important to follow the rules and play clean. Afterall the entire essence of being a sportsman is in the spirit of the game.

The ban was for a period of two years but has been suspended to a period of one year after Al Hasan accepted the charges.
