Shireen Mazari, Pakistan’s Minister for Human Rights, has written a letter to UNICEF asking for the removal of Priyanka Chopra from their post of Goodwill Ambassador. Priyanka earlier sent a tweet “Jai Hind” after India launched airstrikes on Pakistan this February.
The matter blew out of proportion when a Pakistani woman called her out on her hypocrisy. Now Pakistan has taken the formal route and has penned down a letter to the UN.
The content of the letter reads:
Ms Chopra has publicly endorsed Indian government position on Kashmir and also supported the nuclear threat issued to Pakistan by the Indian Defence Minister. All this goes completely against the principles of peace and goodwill that Ms Chopra is supposed to uphold as an UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace.
I wish to draw the attention to the issue of Ms Priyanka Chopra whom you have appointed as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace. The recent crisis in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) has been the result of the Modi government’s violation of all international conventions that it is a signatory to, along with UNSC resolutions as well as conducting a campaign of ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Muslims in IOK. The Modi government is also denying 4 million Muslims of their citizenship in Assam creating ‘detention centres’ akin to Nazi concentration camps. The Indian Occupation Forces have also intensified their campaign of using pellet guns against women and children as well as violence and abuse of women in IOK. The entire policy of the BJP government is similar to the Nazi doctrine of ethnic cleansing, racism, fascism and genocide. Ms Chopra has publicly endorsed this Indian government position and also supported the nuclear threat issued to Pakistan by the Indian Defence Minister.
All this goes completely against the principles of peace and goodwill that Ms Chopra is supposed to uphold as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace. Her jingoism and support for violations by the Modi government of international conventions and UNSC resolutions on Kashmir, as well as support for war, including a nuclear war, undermines the credibility of the UN position to which she has been elevated. Unless she is removed immediately, the very idea of a Goodwill Ambassador for Peace becomes a mockery globally.
Therefore, I would request that she be immediately denotified as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace.
In all this controversy, Bollywood seems to be siding with Priyanka. So far, Kangana Ranaut, Ayushmann Khurrana, director Ali Abbas Zafar , and Javed Akhtar have spoken in her favour.
Kangana Ranaut: It’s not an easy choice to make… when you are stuck between your duty and your emotions, being a UNICEF goodwill ambassador sure you can’t limit your identity to one nation, but how many of us choose heart over mind every day.
Ayushmann Khurrana: Priyanka Chopra is representing our country very well. She is not an Indian icon, but a global icon. Being a daughter of an army officer she is a good representative of India.
Ali Abbas Zafar: It sounds silly. My suggestion to them is not to meddle with India’s affairs and not target our artists, but focus on making the lives of their people better.
Javed Akhtar: I know Priyanka Chopra personally. She is a cultured, decent and educated person and the fact remains she is an Indian. If there is some kind of a controversy and difference in point of view between an average Indian citizen and the Pakistani establishment, obviously her point of view will be an Indian point of view. If her comments have upset the Pakistani establishment, they can do whatever they wish.
BTW what do you think about all this spiralling out of control mess?
